The Best Place to Eat

Did you know there was one (very famous) fast food chain that spent more than 500 million dollars last year—in advertising alone? Think about that ...

FIVE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS!!

And the food isn't even that good.

Oh, I eat there sometimes. Mostly when I come to your town. Because when I am in your town, I don't know where else to go ... Don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against franchises. I eat at a lot of them. Some franchises are really good. Some ... (like Chick-Fil-A) are even great.

But what about the really unique—great value—fantastic tasting—one of a kind experience restaurant? Yeah, you are probably thinking of one in your area right now, but how am I supposed to find it? For the most part, eateries like these don't advertise much. They have a local clientele so they probably figure there's no need.

These fabulous places don't usually look like a restaurant you'd take a chance on. They invest money in their employees and their food—not the building. For instance, the Conestoga Steak House in Dothan, Alabama is housed in a plain, white painted, concrete block structure, but their steaks are better than any I have eaten in the world. And the yeast rolls are better than the steaks. And you can't spend twenty dollars a person there even if you eat dessert! Sure, there are nicer digs, but I am into the food.

I had the idea to write about this topic for two reasons:

1) I am curious (and hopeful) about whether these kinds of "mom and pop" restaurants will be around in our world much longer.

2) While they are here, I want to know where to eat!

Small, family owned restaurants aren't normally managed in such a way as to maximize profits—if there are any profits to begin with. In addition to the dearth of advertising mentioned above, these businesses don't have multiple locations with one central buyer who can negotiate bulk rates for all the locations at once. Or favorable tax and zoning ordinances. Or huge walk-in freezers for storing food bought at low prices.

Nope, they have only our enthusiasm to advertise the specials that go up on a blackboard by the cash register. There is one kitchen and mom or dad is in it. All the food is fresh (where would they store it?) Heck, it is a miracle if there is any money left over at the end of the year, but that's okay, they'll tell you. After all, they only started this place because everybody loved mama's fried chicken ... or daddy's vegetable soup was the best anyone had ever eaten ... or Lillian was making pizzas for the UPS man and soon she was making twenty a day! (Lillian's Pizza—Perdido, Florida ... six miles from my house).

Will these places be here when our children grow up? I hope there will always be a family excited enough about Aunt Minnie's homemade rolls or Earl's barbeque sauce to share the tastes with the rest of us. We just have to be sure they can "make it" financially. So when the question comes ... "Where ya wanna eat lunch?" ... Don't always make it fast food. Remember good food. The kind your mom encouraged you to eat. Don't worry, they can get it to your table fast if you're in a hurry!

In my area, the Crazy Horse Café is not to be missed. Look on the map. Highway 98 going east from Foley, Alabama through Elberta into Lillian (not named after the Pizza Lillian ... this is a whole 'nother Lillian) and across the Lillian Bridge. Florida begins at the bottom of the bridge and 4/10ths of a mile from the state line, on the left, is the Crazy Horse.

Crazy Horse Cafe

Even though they don't have a sign, there will be a pile of cars in the gravel and shell parking lot, so you can't miss it. The sign they did have was blown through four years ago by Hurricane Ivan—the frame is still there—and nobody figured there was any need to replace it. All the locals know where the Crazy Horse is and the name is painted above the front door anyway!

The menu changes a bit every day. I usually choose from the several meats and what seems like fifty different vegetables. Our boys loooove the fried fish and Polly won't get anything but the big ole cheeseburger. Jimmy makes them by hand. You know, the burger patty is never perfectly round, but there's a lot of meat there, it's seasoned just right, and you won't ever eat a better one.

No reservations, seat yourself, the Crazy Horse Café (now serving breakfast until 10:30) has been in the same location since God's dog was a puppy and is owned and operated by Jimmy and Barbara Stewart. Whichever one is not busy will probably meet you at the door and welcome you in.

Don't go on Sunday because Jimmy and Barbara are at church. The place is closed. Yes, I know that Sunday is the biggest money making day for any restaurant ... but I already told you, Jimmy and Barbara are at church.

Don't go on Monday either unless you want to work. That is the day Barbara spends in the kitchen getting a jump on the desserts for the week. Trust me on this ... the desserts are unbelievable. There are at least five different choices at all times. Pies, cakes, cobblers, and puddings are always "just coming out of the oven".

"Pineapple-upside-down-cake's still hot," is how we were greeted one day last week. We turned it down though. The boys wanted the coconut pie and I NEVER refuse Barbara's blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream on it. Polly got what she always gets for dessert ... "just a bite of yours."

Anyhoo, there is my recommendation for when you visit our Pensacola/Mobile/Gulf coast area. So now you tell me: Where do I eat in your town?

Yours,
Andy

"Andy,
When I am on the road recruiting I always drive around looking for the ma & pop places. Just across the border into Ohio is a rib place called Baumbachs. Located in New Paris, OH population under 200 (not really...but small still the same). Great dry rub ribs...my favorite."

"Please don't forget LuLu's at the foot of bridge going into (or coming from as the case may be) Gulf Shores. I am from Bay Minette and my friend and I go there for lunch every Thursday not only for the delicious food but for the friendly employees that know us by name and make our visits very enjoyable (or we would not make the trip from Bay Minette every week). Most of the waitreses have been with them for years."

"I am from Anniston, Alabama (even though I live in Tampa, Florida now).
My in-laws lived in Dothan, and I was staioned at Fort Rucker, so your comments about the Conestoga Steak House are right on target. My Father-in-Law used to make sure that we were in the parking lot no later than 4:45 PM, because at 5:00 PM, when the doors open for dinner, there is a long line of customers waiting to get in before the wait starts. In the Anniston area, if you like Bar-B-Que, Brad's Bar-B-Que in Oxford is the place to eat. When you come to Tampa (as I know you do because I have seen you), get away from the hotels downtown and go to one of the following restaurants: Spanish food -La Teresita on Columbus Avenue. For Italian food - That's Amore' on Harbour Island (in the midst of Post Harbour Island apartments, so it is still a well-kept secret). For more of a Mexican flair - Algusto's on Kennedy Blvd. (just west of downtown). If you're ever in St.Petersburg, forget the hot dogs at Tropicana Field; go to Coney Island Sandwich Shop on 9th Street North in downtown St. Petersburg. They have been open since 1926, and - as Andy says - forget the digs, just enjoy fresh Coney Island hot dogs with all the trimmings. If you are in the mood for something different (British theme), go to Moon Under Water on Beach Drive in St. Pete. For seafood, try Crabby Bill's on Central Avenue.

Good eating!"

"Hi Andy!

A man after my own heart "where is the best LOCAL place to eat?"

I live 25 miles north of Atlanta in a city called Cumming (yes, it is a real city name) Georgia also has Intercourse and Climax - repressed Southern Baptist climate popping out I guess...

Anyway, around the corner from my house is a place in Vickery Village called Sydney's - upstairs fine Italian Dining - downstairs Pizza, Sandwiches, Video Games and Guitar Hero - they call you by name when you walk in - just started serving breakfast, and took my oldest son there before school.

The next time you are in Atlanta....

Up the road about 90 minutes from here is a little town in the foothills called Ellijay, and they have Col. Poole's Bar-B-Que. Ate there last spring and wrote a blog post about it:

Thanks for a great post Andy!

"Okay, I always have something to comment about but this is one of my favorite subjects because I love going out to eat! For anyone who is passing by the area or who is just looking to find a new place to eat continuously you have to make it to Cafe Bella Rue in Grovehill, AL. Mapquest 642 Allen Rd.; it is a very small town right between Jackson and Thomasville, and they are open Sunday for lunch! Everything Andy said about a truely great restaurant is true, especially the fresh food part. The chef there prides himself on making his customers happy and very well fed. Enough said!"

"Friendly Farms Resturant in UpperCo Maryland I83 before the PA/MD border. Maout Carmel road west and take a right on.... look ofr the sign or smell the fresh sugar rolls you get when you sit down. Cafeteria style where you pre oder your meal and get all the fresh sides you can handle. Fried Chicken, crab cakes, pork chops big enough to have a second meal the next day. Old school feeding and reasonable my family looks to go once a month."

"I'm a little way's away from where you all like to eat. I read with interest where you like to eat it's quite a way from here in Burlington Ont Canada. I like to go just around the corner from where I live across from Lake Ontario. It's called Benny's and you get it caffeteria style but the food is wonderful because it's freshly made and they bring it to your table. Egg's anyway you want them and they also make the most wonderful corned beef on rye. really thick and juicy.A daily soup to go along with it and salads made fresh in front of you. Good stuff.JC"

"As I was reading the beginning of your blog The Crazy Horse popped into my head as one of those places you were describing. I totally agree with you about the quality of the food and service. It takes me back to my childhood when things were slower paced and you felt like a welcomed guest in someone's home when you went out for a meal.
Makes me want to head in that direction right now for a little "comfort" food."

"Hi Andy,

Thanks for asking! I know you come to Nashville, TN and if you haven't checked out this place up in Ashland City yet consider yourself 'invited'! It's just about 20 minutes north from downtown Nashville on Hwy. 12. It's a 50's soda shop cleverly named: Stratton's Drive In. It's been in operation since 1954 and they too, still pat out the burgers. They enjoy being 'challenged' by shake requests! Polly should try one of their Grilled Cheese Cheesebugers or the chili and while there the boys can entertain themselves with the jukebox. My husband, Steven Stratton, has been running it for the last 37 years! He doesn't advertise either, or have a website. Even in a recession people still flock. Let me know when you are coming and I'll "reserve" you a stool at the counter. The number there is 615-792-9177 (in the kitchen, of course!)"

"Andy,

What you are describing is "word-of-mouth" advertising and that is better than any dollar you could ever spend on advertising becasue it is a testimonial. Places like you describe WILL be around until THEY get tired of doing what they are doing and there is no one left to pick up the business. In Slidell, Louisiana try T-LeBlanc's - great food, inexpensive, not open every day and they are in a closed up old gas station."

"Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm making my list that begins with Fat Mack's for ribs on Piedmont Rd in Atlanta, Harold's Bar B Q south of Turner Field or Sanky's gas station on GA 400 at Dawsonville, and for really fresh fish, the Seagrove Village Market Cafe (SVMC) in Sea Grove Fl.

The November issue of a great new magazine, Garden & Gun has an article entitled The Best Southern Foods, 100 Things You Simply Must Eat Before You Die. The grouper sandwich is on the list from the SVMC as is Harold's here in Atlanta.

I'm looking forward to trying Mrs. Armstrong's fried coconut pie in Centerville, Tn. (Andy, that for your boys)

"I'm from Olympia, Washington, where we have lots and lots of Asian restaurants, many of them 'mom and pop' eateries. My favorite is called Jimmy's, located in a little hole-in-the-wall place attached to the Albertson's grocery store on Pacific Ave, just off I-5 exit 107, as you head toward Lacey.
My family's favorite 'fast food chain' as I was growing up here was Big Tom's, each tiny drive-in owned and operated by the original Tom's parents; my mother went through school with Tom. Most of the drive-ins are gone now, replaced by wider freeways and larger buildings, but two originals remain, one at the Pacific Ave/4th Ave junction, where Olympia morphs into Lacey, the other on Harrison Ave at the top of the hill on the "west side." Both still serve the best burgers ever with the best homemade 'goop' ever.
When we went to China in 2003 to adopt our youngest son, we ate at a little place off the beaten path - our guide took us there, tourists don't go to that part of the city - and they had the best food I've ever eaten, ever in my 'whole born put together.' I want to go back. If I ever find out exactly where it is and what it's called, I'll let you know."

"Well it looks like this didn't go through the first time so #20 appears a little out there by itself.

First of all this is brilliant and something I hope is up for ever so we can keep adding to it.

In Atlanta, Fat Mack's for ribs on Piedmont Ave, for Bar-B-Q it's Harold's south of Turner Field or at Sanky's gas station on Ga 400 at the Dawsonville exit (That's at the outlet mall for those of you who like to shop)

In Seagrove Fl. the fresh fish at the Seagrove Village Market Cafe (SVMC)is by far and away the best along the Emerald Coast. I've been sending people there since it was just called the Seagrove Market.

In the November issue of a great new magazine called Garden & Gun there's an article titled The Best Southern Foods, 100 Things You Simply Must Eat Before You Die.

Both the SGVM & Harold are mentioned as is Mrs. Armstrong's fried coconut pie in Centerville Tn. and a great looking coconut cream pie (for Andy's boys) at Jim 'N Nicks in Birmingham.

"Fort Worth....

for "bait" (aka Sushi) and other things Asian there's a great little place owned by a wonderful young couple located on the West Side near the intersection of Camp Bowie & Merrick.

Tokyo Cafe...

On your 1st visit introduce youself to Jarry or his wife Mary; on your second visit they will greet you by name and know if there's anything special that you will want.

The wait staff are enthusiastic, helpful and friendly as well.

Some of the best sushi available. Some of the tasiest Asian dishes, too!

"Prattville, Montgomery area Alabama
Andy, you can not get better Southern style Barbeque than at Fat Boy's Barbeque Ranch in Prattville. Danny and Gretchen Loftin have a secret that makes their pulled pork, ribs and chicken the best I have eaten. Better than what I cook on the home grill and that is saying something. Their camp stew is fantastic but the best item on the menu is Gretchen's Banana Puddin'.
The atmosphere is homey and, yes it is closed on Sunday because Danny and Gretchen ARE in church.
Put a plate of their food on top of your head and your tongue will beat your brains out trying to get to it.
Look them up on the web at http://www.fatboysbarbqueranch.com/ or give them a call at 334-358-4227.

If you're ever up Bozeman, MT way...
For burgers- go to Burger Bob's. Small, but the best burgers around and you pick your fixins.
For inexpensive great food- La Parillas. You can eat here easily for under $10.

"Andy....You probably won't believe this but out here in the San Francisco Bay Area there is a 14 mile stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway (HWY 1) from the south end of Pacifica to the middle of Half Moon Bay that I refer to as the Fast-Food-Free-Zone...in other words NO Micky-D's or Taco Smells, Burger-Prince, or even a DQ in sight. There are however some great family-run restaurants, even at the Harbor: El Gran Amigo in Moss Beach, Cafe Gibraltar in El Granada, Barbara's Fishtrap, Half Moon Bay Brewery, Mezza Luna, Ketch Joanne and Princeton Seafood Company in Princeton-by-the-Sea. And the Miramar Beach Inn -(A former brothel)plus.... the Pete Douglas Beach House - The Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society for good Music to boot in Miramar.

Now that I have said it , there is bound to be some franchise owner that will see this and come to ruin it for us all, however, the locals will remain loyal to the great places and the tourists will flock to the fast-food. "Do you want fries with that?"

If you ever happen to be out here, you should check them out. -Cid Young"

Mark, one of the owners is there to greet pilots and bicyclists and locals alike with is wacky sense of humor and excellent food. Very inconspicuous, which is why I almost forgot it! "Islamorada, FL

Living in a tourist town can sometimes make it hard to find a restaurant that isn't marketed to the tourists, however, there are some great "local" restaurants here in the Keys beginning with CRAIG'S located at Mile Marker 90 on the bayside. They have the best fish sandwich you will ever eat - fresh, crispy (or blackened) and always hot! Or, if you have kids and want to let them play a little while you relax and watch a game on one of the tv's, you should try CHILLIE WILLIE'S at Mile Marker 86 on the Oceanside. They have fabulous chicken wings and a game room for the kids."

The best key lime pie in the WORLD is found right down 98 at the Donut Hole on Hwy 98 just before seaside. That's not even mentioning the donuts there - oooey gooey thick crispy sugary...... you get the idea. Donut Hole is my top spot for sweets when we're on vacation in South Walton County.

Thanks for the Crazy Horse suggestion, we will make a point of visiting there next time down.

To reciprocate - you have to try the Red Barn BBQ in Colleyville, TX, just north of DFW airport. Mouthwatering good BBQ. Not to be missed.

"Andy:

After you've hit the place in Ashland City next time you're in Nashville, head a little further around Briley Parkway to the Whites Creek Pike exit, and head north to Whites Creek. Check out Richard's Café for some good cajun cooking. Across the street is an old hangout for some of the James Gang (19th century version, not the band...) called Earthman's; the current proprietor Bonnie fixes a mean cheeseburger. Give me a call, and I'll meet you there!"

This will help small businesses compete in the big box world."

Kelsey's Pizzeria is great - it a local franchise with 3 locations - soon to be 4. Everyone loves their food. There are several good places out at Port Canaveral too, such as Grill's."

"If you are in Hopewell Junction, NY and want to taste the best pizza around in a town with a lot of great pizza, head for Nick's Pizza on Route 82 - a small place in a strip plaza, Nick's has been around for more than 40 years (they used to be across the street). The crust is thin and crispy, the sauce is mild and spicy (both) and the cheese is melted to perfection. We have eaten so much pizza from Nick's that they should have a plaque for us!!!! But actually, they deserve the plaque for the best pizza around."

My favorites in the area are Cheryls Cafe in Spanish Fort, Dick Russells in Tillmans C orner, John Words Jazz Cafe on the causeway for a ladies filet, and the best deli in America, Sunshine, across from Baptist P'cola. You can't go wrong with any of these I guarentee it!"

"Andy,
I am from the Effingham Illinois area (and no I didn't just cuss). One of the best places to eat (right off of Interstates 57 and 70) is Niemergs Steakhouse. They have the best fried chicken you've ever eaten and their pies are choice too!

The thing I love about Niemergs too is the fact that owner Gene Niemerg always greets you with a smile and he gives back to the community too. I used to work for a radio station in Effingham and we did a 24 hour donation drive for Catholic Charities (a local organization that takes care of everything from light bills, to prescription drugs, to food, to places to eat and stay at for transcients etc...and it doesnt matter if your Catholic or not). Well every year during our 24 hour drive, Gene would come up and donate 500 one meal coupons for Catholic charities to give to transients and would also bring this lowly disc jockey some of his famous fried chicken to knosh on while staying up for 24 hours.

I'm convinced that the locals all do their best to keep Niemergs and Gene around for a long time and I hope it stays that way. I know that everytime I'm in Effingham... I have to stop... even to just say "Hi" to Gene and some of the waitstaff Ive met through the years.

Also a Ps.... If you ever in Nashville just south of Music row is a BP gas station and behind it is a little place that is white brick and it has no sign.. but it has the best burgers!!!

This was a cool topic.... aint nothing like talking about good eatin'!!!!

Bobbie"

"There are two places I love to eat at in Paducah Kentucky. It's been almost four years since I was there and I didn't get to go then. But one is Bob's Drive-Inn on Bridge Street, home of the Fiesta Burger. There's nothing that comes close to it anywhere else I've been.

Then there's Starne's Barbeque. It's across from Noble Park. If you ever get to go there, ask for Mamaw Shaffer's Cole Slaw. That's my Mamaw. The restaurant used to be owned by my uncle, Donald Starnes. He was killed in a plane crash over 20 years ago. But his brother has kept it going strong since before I was born. I'm 50 now.

"Andy,
The last time you and I worked on an audiobook together we went to a sushi place near your hotel. If you're ever back in the west suburbs of Chicago and have a hankerin' for sushi I would highly recommend Kinta Sushi (135 Hiawatha Dr, Carol Stream, IL 60188). It's a recent discovery for me and such a hole-in-the-wall that you may not even find it or think it's open when you do. But it's now the favorite date-night spot for me and my wife.

If you're in the mood for Indian then I would suggest India Palace (242 E Geneva Rd
Wheaton, IL).

"One of the best and truly the most eclectic pizza place ever is Satchell's in Gainesville, FL. Satchel's Blog is in the front of his menus. Live music Friday and Saturday evening. Always busy so plan on a wait, but you can order ahead and eat in the back at Lightin' Salvage. The Lightin' Salvage store/waiting area is really a tin shed with a unique assortment of one of a kind collections!

Located in Northeast Gainesville.

Other great places in Gainesville.. La Fiesta (newberry road), Ichiban (Sushi NW 43th Street)and for steak..MT Chop House.

"If you're ever in Northern California around Redding, go a little south to Cottonwood and eat at The Oldtown Eatery. Best food in the north state, breakfast, lunch or dinner. If we're going out 19 times out of 20 that's where we go. It's a 25 minute drive, but well worth it. It would be closer to go into Redding with a heck of alot more choices, but none as good."

"Home Grown Food!!! - I grew up in Gulf Shores (Foley, Class '85) and I miss Hazels biscuits. Them are some good eatin.

Now I live in New Hampshire and started a good ole fashion tea business. OK - there's really nothing old fashioned about our teas. We are doing something new with something old - and I burned all my boats to do it.

If you are ever in our area (1 hour N. of Boston), please look us up. We need a good "y'all" every now and then.

You can also buy our tea at www.portsmouthtea.com. While in Gulf Shores, stop by ERA Class.com and they'll make you some. They are my best customer (cuz they're family & and they are big Andy Andrews fans)."

"I sent your blog to my cousin in Winona,Minnesota his name is Bob Northam and he said: My friends Steve and Stacy operate Steve's Anchor Inn and Steve is a master chef. Breakfast is excellent , you can even order Eggs Benedict ( as the menu states ; if Steve's having a good day and is in a good mood!) Their barbequed ribs (Thursday's rib day) are hand-rubbed and he makes his own sauce that he refuses to divulge the recipe for. Fish specials on Friday are premiere - whether batter-fried or broiled. No dinner available, tho. It's truly a mom and pop place and they figure 8 hrs a day is enough. The man can cook corned beef so tender you can cut it with a spoon! Just a hop, skip and jump across the big muddy ( Mississippi for you non-natives) in the tiny burg of Centerville,Wi. is another mom and pop place called Beedle's. The men's bathroom is a shrine dedicated to Marilyn Monroe and the ladies is one for Elvis. They make a Au Gratin potato that's off the charts. There's a great salad bar and they offer a broasted pork chop that elevates the lowly swine far above biblical standards. Never had a bad steak there, either. Wason's Supper Club is 4 miles further down Hwy. #35 on the outskirts of Galesville and is a trip back in time to a far more genteel dining experience. Kind of old-world charm with young people more well-mannered than you're used to seeing in these modern times. Food's exceedingly palatable as well. Now if you should mistakenly turn north off the bridge out of Winona - don't bother turning around - Fountain City has 2 majorly tasty establishments in the Golden Frog and Wing Dam Saloon. Don't worry - come to Winona and we won't let you go away hungry."

I was introduced to this fabulous little restaurant recently and it has become my favorite. It's not much to look at from the outside. In fact, you'd think it was a chain restaurant. It's not. It's Mexican food with a twist of Cuban and Carribean flair. For traveler's, it's extremely easy to find as it's right off of the major interstate running through St. Petersburg, Fl.

"Andy, Should you find yourself in Michigan's Upper Penninsula you will see "Pasties" advertised. They are a hold over from the miner's who used to carry them down to the mines on their heads under their hats to keep them warm until lunch. They are a crust, made with lard if they're real, and filled with beef, potatoes, onions, and rutabaga if they're authentic, or carrots if they're made for the finicky. The best ones are in a yellow house just west of Munising on the main road. The sign outside says "Muldoon's". They are the best! If you are there in the Fall they also have a pumpkin pie pastie which is the best dessert anyone could want.

If it's broiled whitefish you like (better for your cholesterol level than pasties), the best is in Mackinaw City at the tip of the lower penninsula. Go down the main street in this tourist town almost to the dock where the boats take you to Mackinaw Island, but look to your right just before the dock and see Cunningham's restaurant. They have the freshest white fish broiled to perfection. Oh, and they make all their own baked good to go with it. I reccommend the pie--any flavor, all homemade. If you need something for "later", walk across the street to JoAnn's Fudge and buy whatever fantasy flavor you prefer. We tourists aren't called "fudgies" for nothin'! Oh, and in Michigan if you live in the U.P you are a "Yooper" and if you live in the lower pennisula, you are a "troll" (trolls live below bridges after all).

Renee, a troll and a fudgie who loves pasties "with" (means with rutabagas), and the broiled whitefish at Cunningham's."

"At this moment, I have 2 spare ribs and ABT's on the Egg. What is this "eating out" that you speak of? ;)

When you come through Knoxville, do yourself a favor and go to Puleo's Grill. It consistently wins BEST OF for restaurant, chef, and service. The owner is a hands on guy who really knows his "Southern Roots/Italian Heritage" niche. He has visited our table on a few occasions and is a top notch guy!

Can't wait to try Crazy Horse when we spend a week in Perdido this spring."

80. toBeatrice Furman:

January 25, 2009 @ 11:57 AM

"I second what Renee said about pasties. I love those. There used to be a restaurant in Lansing, Michigan called "The Miner's Bucket" that made only pasties. Have not had a good one in forever, so I guess I'd better go up North.

In Jackson, Michigan, go to Matt's Cafe, if you want the best ribbs or pulled pork in town.

For Breakfast, hands down, go to the restaurant in the airport, or to Cherry's cafe, even though the smoek can be a problem in both. Great food.

For dinner, the Bone Island Grill has to be my personal favorite in Vandercook Lake, just outside of Jackson. They have a Grouper Reuben that is to die for.

The best place though is in the tiny town of Napoleon South of Jackson, and it's aptly called the Napoleon Cafe. Really good food made mostly from scratch, with the best pie this side of Jackson."

"Andy, you may have your start to your own “Travelers Guide to the Best Mom & Pop Places to Eat.” As an over-the-road truck driver I love going to local owner/operator restaurants. I’d also like to recommend a few. Top of my list is Tom’s BBQ, 4087 New Getwell Rd. Memphis, TN 38118 (901) 365-6690. When in Tallahassee FL try Dog Et Al, 1456 S Monroe St. Tallahassee, FL 32301, (850) 222-4099. Just south of Tallahassee in Eastpoint, FL you will find unbeatable seafood at “That Place on 98” 500 US Highway 98, Eastpoint, Florida ~ Tel: 850-670-9898"

"Andy - After I read about the Wolf Bay Lodge in Island of Saints, we made a point to go there last summer when we went to Gulf Shores - Loved it! Also have done breakfast at Hazel's. As I'm sure you know - one of the best places to get crab claws is Sun Place Else on the way out to Ft. Morgan.
When you are in South Western Pennsylvania - Perryopolis to be specific - people like Randell's Resturant right on Rt. 51 as you drive into town on the left if you are driving south from the burgh. Randell's is known for their pies. If you want to take Polly to some place VERY nice, you'll want to drive into Perryopolis proper, just turn left at the light, go to the circle and take the right hand turn, go down two blocks and on your right caty corner from the firehouse is Lenore's - home cooked to order, excellent food and service. It's not an everyday place, someplace you go to impress someone. If you need a place to stay Lenore's is also a bed and breakfast."

"Sibling's Restaurant in Hartwell, Ga was started by, well, a brother and sister. They use their Maw Bennie's recipes mostly. It is old school home cookin with a twist on some old american cuisine. I don't know, I'm not a food critic. I just know that is some good food. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. Bill Bruce and Cyrise Griffin own it and are almost always there."

"Andy, north of New Orleans about 50 miles is Hammond, LA. Now I know that if you are in N.O. there are an abundance of good food places...however, you really need to get out of the city to the North Shore to White's. Take I-12 to Robert (just east of Hammond), go north about 15 miles to the middle of nowhere to White's steak and seafood. The best steaks around and the best seafood buffet I've ever seen. The restaurant is owned by Peggy White Morris and her husband Jim. They bought it from her parents who live next door . All the kids and grandkids worked in the restaurant at one time or another. You can't get more "Mom and Pop" and Kids and Grandkids than that. And while you are there, you have to try the breadpudding...the BEST!

If you are leary about leaving the big highway, give me a call...I'm only two miles from I-12 and we would love to guide you to our favorite place to eat.

"In Raleigh, NC, you have to stop in at "The Irregardless Cafe". Here is the website: http://www.irregardless.com/cafe.html. Here is the history: http://www.irregardless.com/history.html.
The owner, Arthur Gordon, walks around to nearly each table each night thanking the patrons and offering little bits of wisdom. His employees and staff have been around for years!
On Friday and Saturday nights, they have live music and, when the patrons seated on the dance floor leave, you can find guests shagging and swinging the evening away.

"Tulsa: Jamil's Steakhouse has the best steaks (huge and smoked, always juicy) and they come with appetizers that are equally great - hummus and veggies, cabbage rolls, salad, smoked rib and bologna, and tabouli.

Oklahoma City: There's a small Vietnamese enclave in NW OKC. The Mirawa (on 23rd St if I remember correctly but probably not) has the BEST Vietnamese food I have ever had. My favs are the crispy, spicy, salty shrimp (flashed fried with a little bit of jalapenos), pork in fish sauce in a pot, spring rolls, beef noodle soup, and the stuffed tofu (sounds much worse than it is)."

"It is so funny that you posted this! We were just in Hunstville for a seminar and ate at 2 awful places! I always insist on finding the mom & pops too, but his trip, we just didn't pick the right places!
I go to breakfast at "Dallas chicken & Biscuits" many mornings (no we aren't in Dallas. I asked the owner once why it was named that & he said that was the name when he bought it!). Anyway, most of friends jeer that they are afraid they will get a heart attack if they eat there! Oh well, their loss:)
In our town the among the many "fees" to open a restaurant is a "sewer impact fee" which all by itself can be $20-50,000! Before you build anything, put in a sink or sell a french fry! I don't even own a restaurant, but found that so disturbing that I have spoken before the Town council on several occasions about what that does to prohibit locally owed eateries.
In any case, we are blessed to have some great restaurants and "mom & pop" stores in our little Historic Apex NC, and everybody loves them! Thanks for reminding folks (as I often do), loving them isn't enough. You've got to patronize them, and support them so they can stay around!
If you are ever in NC, let me know and I'll be happy to give you a list! There are lots of great choices :)"

I speak with single moms, self-published my book, and decide every day I'm doing this for the children...yours, too. Thank you...maybe I'll speak with you on stage one day (one of my visions, too). Blessings to you and everyone in the world, Christina"

"Hi Andy!

I know everyone's talking about BBQ however (btw, I agree with #20/25 on Fat Matt's)...when you, Polly & the Boys are in Atlanta, you MUST go to Nuevo Laredo Cantina..it is the most authentic Mexican food I've tasted...period. I'll even order for you:
1 Chicken Mole platter
4 Lobster Taco's
4 Shrimp Taco's
1 Chile Rellenos platter
chips & salsa
guacamole & cheese dip

:~)

Continued success in all that you do!
Nancy Jamison"

"Andy, I heard you speak in Lakeland on Tuesday night. I enjoyed your talk on perspective, but the thing that impressed me the most was your "Heart Check" with your boys. That showed me that you know and fear the Lord. What a powerful way to connect with your kids. That is of eternal value. I have two girls(Heather 13 and Juliana 8) and I have already started asking them questions at bed time. I have a great relationship with them but I believe this will only deepen it. Jeremiah 9:23 says "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, Let not the strong man boast in his strength, Nor let the rich man boast in his riches; But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me.
Keep up the great work you are doing! Mike"

"When you're in West Lafayette, IN, you can't miss a fab lunch at the Triple XXX. It's a former root-beer drive-in restaurant just a couple of blocks from Purdue University. They were featured on The Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives," with awesome burgers and all the fixins. Another great local spot is McGraw's Steak, Seafood and Chop restaurant, which sits just outside of town, on the bank of the Wabash River. The owner, Todd McGraw, takes great pains to be certain he has the very best, fresh beef, pork and seafood at all times. And the service is fantastic! So come on up to Indiana, Andy! We're having a heatwave right now, with a high temperature of 45--FAR better than the bitterly cold temps we've had since the beginning of the year. God bless you for your witness!"

To Dominic's Pizza in Waterbury, CT; Blackie's Hot Dogs in Cheshire, CT; Regina's Pizza in Boston; Four Seas Ice Cream and Cooke's Seafood on Cape Cod. The Italian Village in Chicago. The list is endless. Thank God."

"If you ever get to Lake City, Florida just a little ways across the Florida/Georgia border on I-75, check out TUCKERS in downtown Lake City. It's across the square from the Courthouse in a historic building which was at one time the one and only hotel in Lake City. It's called the Blanche Connection. The restaurant is tucked away in the back just behind the check-in desk. Come on in!!!

The owners are extremely friendly and on Thursdays lunch the all-you- can-eat special is the fried shrimp. They serve home-made potato chips that are absolutely delicious. You can get a meal for under $10.00 and the food is wonderful. Just a nice, friendly home-owned restaurant. Very friendly and helpful owner who always out to please his customers.

Another place is in my town just down the road about 30 miles on I-75 at exit 399 in Alachua, Florida. The building is on Main Street in a historic building and sports an awning like a conestoga wagon. Outside at the curb there are great hand carved wooden seats that are so charming. The place is called Conestogas Restaurant (yes, you heard right... WE have one too!) This is an all service menu and offers some extra special steaks and beef tips plus most nights there's an all-you-can-eat special. The meat loaf and mashed potatoes are WONDERFUL!

The BCB Stogie Burger is one that you have to eat in 3 sittings...it's HUGE of the most wonderful hand formed beef with strips of bacon and cheese. There is a junior version that most people CAN eat in one sitting. Oh, don't forget the fried potato sticks to go along with it; they are wonderful. Also served are some truly decadent desserts, come check them out. They have a really quaint little candy/ice cream shop on the premises.

Rick, the owner is one of those owners who is always available to stop in and just say hi and to see how he can help you. He's truly a working owner.

See www.conestogasalachua.com for their offerings."

"i just closed my family run restaurant. lost $500,000 in the process. we had great food, it was pretty and live music on weekends. We would be empty serving 30 dinners on a friday in a restaurant that holds 200. The chains serving garbage food would have a wait....we sat empty. oh well, eat chain food, thats what they deserve. I will continue to support independent business people whenever i possibly can."

"Hi Andy, I found a true gem this past week while traveling on business in Wichita, KS. Luciano's Italian restaurant in Mulvane, KS. It is just outside Wichita. The restaurant is tucked in the quaint downtown area. It is like stepping back in time. The story goes like this...Luciano is from Tuscany, Italy where he met the love of his life. She was an english teacher from Mulvane, KS who was teaching english in Tuscany. Luciano was introduced to her by a friend who was a student in her class. They fell in love. In 2003, Luciano followed his new love to her hometown of Mulvane and opened Luciano's restaurant. The service is very accomodating, the food true italian cuisine like I have never experienced. I was able to visit with Luciano who visited our table after he prepared our delicious food. He said he changes his menu four times a year due to being in a small town he must keep it interesting for his guests. However, he keeps the most popular dishes on at all times. He said he learned that the hard way, as when he began updating the menu quarterly, guests would come in and want their favorite. It is one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long while. Give it a try and tell Luciano I said hello from Pensacola, FL."

"When in Atlanta, try one of the NE suburbs in Gwinnett County (Dacula)... Mexican at Del Rio on Auburn Rd. Way too good to even desribe. Fresh food, refreshing atmosphere, a buffet on Sunday afternoon (but I only order from the menu for endless variety). One absolute must is the Tortilla soup -- just awesome!!! Enjoy."

"Come on down to Fuquay Varina, NC and have the best country breakfast around. In fact, there are two places you can eat. If you want lunch, only come during the weekdays. One is closed on weekends and the other only cooks fresh hamburgers. But, for breakfast, ahh - the best!! Campbell's and Jus' Enough are my favorites by a long shot...good eatin'."
