My Favorite Book?
Hi Everyone!
For those of you who might have wondered, “Where did Andy go? We haven’t heard from him in a while . . .”, I have been hard at work on my 2011 book. Whew! I must admit, it is more than a bit consuming. Soon, I want to blog on the process. It will be a great way for me to decompress. Ha!
Right now, I had to drop everything and tell you (my buddies) what is happening! I appreciate so much your encouragement and support and wanted YOU to be the first to “understand” the latest development in our lives. I am very excited about this so . . . here it goes.
The book that will be released this May 4th has generated more questions than any work I have ever produced. Therefore, in an effort to satisfy what might become an overwhelming curiosity, maybe it is best that I address those questions for you now—before you begin to read!
I am often asked if I have a favorite among the books I have written. Yes, I do. And this is it. The Heart Mender is not only what I believe to be my best work, it is the most compelling—bringing all aspects of a mystery, love story, and thriller to the table in order to deliver a life-changing principle.
Now read carefully here . . . What is my greatest career disappointment? Again, I would answer, the manuscript that is about to be released. Not this title—just the manuscript. You see, the manuscript was previously published under another name—Island of Saints—and for the most part barely even saw a bookstore! Through issues of bad timing, little previous success of my own, and zero publicity, the book was quickly forgotten.
The few people who did find the book, however, became (and remain) extremely vocal about their love for the story and its power. Soon a movie producer found it, and the ball, which had seemed lost in deep weeds, started rolling again.
Now, May 4th, it is being released with a more appropriate title, the backing of a happy publishing company, and a few rabid supporters who still call this their favorite book ever— The Heart Mender is ready to go. And now there is only the biggest question of all waiting to be answered . . .
“Is this story true?”
Without exception, every person who has read this book has asked that question.
And the answer is . . . yes . . . for the most part. All the numbers, the history, the dates, and the items I found are real. I have changed some locations and most of the names. The principal characters do exist, but perhaps not in the specific manner in which they are presented. Curiously, a few of the main characters’ experiences turned out to be more common than I had previously believed. When the first incarnation of this manuscript was produced, I received communication from several families with proof that they, too, began their lives in this country with the very same kind of history as that of my friends.
At the end of this book (and don’t read ahead!) I decided to add a “Where Are They Now?” section, which I think you will enjoy. And before you ask . . . yes . . . for the most part, it will be true!
Please check out the quick video below. It will give you chills. And some stats about the Nazi submarines and what they did in American waters during World War II. All true and all covered up by the government at that time. The material in this book still blows me away!
Feel free to pass it on . . .
Your friend,
Andy Andrews
Orange Beach, Alabama

I also have asked you "is it true?" So excited about the The Heart Mender, can't wait to get my hands on it. For anyone who hasn't read Island of Saints, this book is must read. "I am a huge Andy Andrews fan and have read everything you have written. Island of Saints was your best and I have bought it for my adult children and gave copies to my class I teach at Samford University in your hometown of Birmingham My son is not an avid reader but he read it in less than a weeks time having a hard time putting it down. You were gracious enough to let me engage you to speak at a sales conference I led which was at Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach. It is still something people speak of, especially the butterfly affect. I am an avid supporter of what you write and say because yours is a message so needed constantly by all of us. I only wish I could have a one on one with you just to talk. Great news that Island of the saints is being reissued and I pray millions will read it for the impact it will have on them. I pray for your success always. Bill Dixon"

"Andy,
"Island of Saints" is by far my favorite of the books you have written to date. It tells an incredibly powerful story and the characters are deeper and more defined than in almost any other book I have ever read. I read it in a single sitting, which for me, is extremely uncommon. You are a phenomenal author and I am thrilled to hear that there is a film producer involved in this project at some level... I hope to see your story on screen very soon.

"THANK YOU!!!!. Island of Saints is my favorite Andy Andrews book (so far)and I had all of the obvious questions. I think the new title will open the book to some readers who judged the book because of the "Saints" in the title. I will buy the new books, and some to give to friends. I look forward to your continued success."

"Andy,
You promised me once that I would love "Island of Saints" and "The Noticer." In both cases, you were 100% right! I am very much looking forward to revisiting "Island of Saints" in "The Heart Mender." After reading the "original" story, I was curious as to what happened to the people in the story, so it will be interesting to see the "Where Are They Now" section at the end.
Have a great day!

"Andy I read and love Island of Saints. I have also read.... The Noticer... Lost Choice and Travler's gift. Last week we were in Orange Beach. We stop in Pack and Mail and got Butterfly Effect, Return to Sawyerton Spring and one more. I am not sure what it was.My husband took it and I haven't seen it since. We love all of your books. We have told several church memember about your writings. Now all of them are reading your books as well. Also all the employee at my work are also reading them. We are so thankful for the work you are doing. I heard you are counting the coffees you drink on this project. We would buy you more if it could help you write faster.

"Andy....
Ever since my manager at a Saturn dealership gave me and our other team members "The Traveler's Gift", I was hooked on Andy! Everything I've read seem to be even better than the last, although they are ALL life changing as one allows them to be. I was particularly fascinated with "Island of Saints" because I felt like I was reading a true story that became more and more exciting with each page. I'm happy to know that the story is indeed true, and it is expected that you would have to alter names of people and locations, but that doesn't make it less believable. Thank you for everything you've written Andy.... your stories have enriched my life and those of others I've with whom I've shared. Keep going Andy!"

"I am confused. Did the Island of the Saints tell this story? Is this book in more detail? I love your books. I almost own everyone of your writings on cd. I listen to them as I travel to work and then I want to stay in my car and continue to listen. But alais I go in to check the child eyes to see if they can see. Then my husband and I listen and discuss each book as well. I also started a Bible study/ Book Study with the Traveler Gift and the young Traveler Gift. Each school I go to I try to tell the Library staff about the Younger Traveler Gift so they will add it to the books in the library and it can make a difference in the students lives. I even challenge a 7/8 grade teacher to play the cd in class to see if it would make a difference. Praise God it did. The excuses that I did not have time to study, etc. The other students told them no -- no -- no -- the Buck stops here. The teacher is sharing with older students and they are rethinking there futures. Many other stories since I found you May of 09. I have bought your books and given them as gifts and tell everyone who will listen about you and to have them check out your website. God is using you in a mighty way. I would love to come to a conference to see you in person. My prayer for you that God will continue to make a difference in peoples lives with your writings. Denice P.S. I loved the picture of the Blue Jay that interpreted you the other day."

Thanks for the foundational principles that underlay your writings. We all need forgiveness and to practice it; we all need a proper perspective on life and to learn from history. Am looking forward to the added material in your new release. God Bless You and your family."

"Andy: You know I have everything you've ever written...and have reviewed some of them for various publications. I always suspected "Island of Saints" was, basically, a true story. I'm glad to have that verified because it bugged the heck out of me!
But tell us....IS there a movie coming out with this new title? Is that why you were in California when you had that car crash last year?
And who is the "happy publisher"?
Come on, Andy, SPILL!

I just finished "Island of Saints" a few days ago and absolutely loved it!! I was telling my husband about it and he asked me, "Is it true?", and I told him as far as I could tell I thought it was, at least, mostly! It is so great to have some clarification on that.
So, tell us...Movie?

"I am a HUGE Andy Andrews fan. While Island of Saints is near the top of the list, The Traveler's Gift and The Lost Choice will always be number 1 and number 2 (with Baseball, Boys, and Bad Words coming in a close third!) because they introduced me to Andy. Anyone reading these books needs to start with the titles above. That is my humble opinion. But, I look forward to reading The Heart Mender (again) and also look forward to the added section. Love you much Andy and would consider it an extreme honor to one day meet you in person."

"This is absolutely one of my favorite books, of yours or anyone else's. I'm surprised to learn it wasn't the megahit that it has been in our family. Surely with the rerelease, it will at last get the attention it deserves.
My father-in-law--who is bound up with bitterness with a catalog of broken relationships behind him--has been in the hospital for the past 8 months. My husband recently started reading to him during visits. So far, together they've read The Traveler's Gift, and Island of Saints. My father-in-law loved them both, and Island of Saints in particular gave my husband a chance to open a meaningful dialogue about forgiveness. I can't yet report any miraculous change of heart on that front, but I know at least he's thinking about it, and that's a miracle in itself."

"Hi Andy, you certainly have one up on Paul Harvey.
Amazing 'rest of the story!" Island of Saints is my favorite Andy Andrews book. So much so that I bought a case and gave all the books away as Christmas/Birthday gifts a couple of years ago. Island of Saints is a story that stayed with me and kept me thinking about the intense emotions of the characters, and what was going on in the world in the early 1940s. Being from a military family I grew up hearing about the Gulf Coast WWII stories but really thought it was more legend than truth. This is a perfect story for a movie. I can't wait to see who will play Helen & Josef."

"Andy, Island of Saints is my favorite of all your writings. It is so for several reasons, the most significant being it's readability with the young teen set. I have had three copies of the book, only to lose them to my 16 year old son's friends! I was also able to introduce the book to my Sunday School class. It sparked many memories, long ago filed away by some of our members. One of the members remembers a POW camp located on her family's property. A teenager at the time, she remembers hearing rumors, but could never figure out how the prisoners got there. My young son has decided that he is a "Noticer" and I think he is right. I know we will both enjoy the "Hear Mender" when it is released! Keep up your wonderful work."

"Hey Andy,
Island of Saints was my favorite too - it's a shame that it didn't take off more in it's original form. I had the pleasure of spending some fun time on the waters of the gulf yesterday - it is amazing to think of the action that took place on those same waters many years ago. My family was here during those times of WWII and never really spoke much of the things that went on during those times. I don't have the privilage to ask my parents about these stories now, but can understand how the stories could easily be kept quite - much of the area was settled by folks with the same background as those sailors on the U-Boats..........
I certainly will look forward to the story making the big screen....
All my best to you and the family - GK"

"I am looking forward to reading the book and I am ordering the older version of it. I was very aware of the Germans in the Gulf during WWII, as there was a German POW/concentration camp about 5 miles from where I live in a place called Edgerly, LA., east of Vinton, LA and West of Lake Charles and Sulphur, LA. The Lake Charles American Press ran an article about it several years ago. We are looking into making the area a WWII Historical Landmark. God Bless."

"Andy, My mother lived at Point Pleasant(between Gulf Shores and Pensacola close to where "Rusty's Seafood Rest. used to be) during WWII;(my Grandfather being stationed at the Air Force Base in Pensacola). My bother and I were grew up vacationing on Santa Rosa Island. Each time we vacationed my mother would take us over to the lagoon at Point Pleasant and while siting on the peer she would tell us many stories, such as: the black out curtains required on the windows; the time that they were crabbing at dusk, you know for those big blue shell crabs, and a periscope serviced in the lagoon. The next day she over heard my grandfather saying that several guards had been killed at the N. A. Base by German soldiers that had made it to shore. She also told funny ones: Several nights later while my grandfather was on base. The girls(she and her sister) heard footsteps on the front porch, my grandmother threw open the door in the dark of the night with her shot gun ready to fight the Germans only to come gun to nose with a wondering cow.
So your book sparked my interest right off. I picked two up(one to send my mother)at a conference after hearing you speak. All of your books are thought provoking and life challenging. I recommend you every chance that presents itself in my Executive Coaching Sessions and your books are always on my recommended reading list that I provide at training seminars. My son enjoys your youth books and well as your CD. "Island of Saints" is a wonderful story told in a wonderful way with your special gifts and talents. I am glad to hear that it has been given rebirth."

Shortly after reading your book, Island of Saints, I took my family to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago to visit/tour the U-boat which was captured during WWII. It was not only interesting to tour the submarine, but also to discover that a family member was on the ship that captured the sub. I have often referred to the pages concerning forgiveness (101, 119-120, 149, 157-158, 235-237) and democracy (141-142)in discussion with others. Thank you for the gift that the Lord has given you, and for sharing it with us.
Sincerely,
N. W. Worden (Habakkuk 3:18)"

"Andy,
I am so excited. I also loved "Island of Saints" and have been trying to get our Library Book Club to read it. Now, with the Heart Mender's publication, it might actually happen!!
There is a paragraph in the "IOS" book where the German officer talks about the demise of a country and that paragraph has haunted me for quite some time. The story of forgiveness is very encouraging also.
I am looking forward to reading the "Heart Mender". THANK YOU!"

"Well, I'm sure I'll pick up The Heart Mender when it releases, but you and the commenters piqued my curiosity about Island of Saints so much I went ahead and bought it from Amazon. Glad to know the bulk of the history I'll be reading is true."

"I received Island of Saints as a gift several years ago. I enjoyed it immensely and have read it multiple times. I've also recommended it to others. I appreciated the way you brought in forgiveness and letting go of bitterness. I hope this renaming and republishing will bring it the attention it deserves."

"You will think I am crazy. FarmVille (from facebook) popped up and I did not recognize the music because I have not played it yet. I thought it was Andy's background music. Sorry."

"Andy, I hope I'm never pressed to pick my favorite book or CD of yours, but Island of Saints is one of my favorites. I find scenes from it running through my mind from time to time, even though it's been awhile since I've listened to it last. It is haunting in some ways and utterly unforgettable. It was, as you mentioned, an education on what the Nazi's did in American waters. It is also a beautiful love story of new beginnings. I didn't know it wasn't "successful". Nobody told me that. It was successful to ME! Thank you! And good for you for not letting something you believed in languish in obscurity when it had value and merit."

"I am very excited about the release of The Heart Mender. As an associate of BAM! Nashville West I was honored to work with a new member of your 'fan club' yesterday who'd only read a small portion of the Traveler's Gift, a copy belonging to a friend. I sold my new friend a copy of every book we had on the shelf here you'd written and ordered her the audio of Traveler's Gift. We were both so excited! I have Isle of Saints and can't wait to read The Heart Mender. Will there be a book signing here in Nashville, TN? I can't wait to see you again and shake your hand. Much success!!"

"Andy,
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a reader. However, after reading five pages, I was hooked! What a beautiful and inspiring story! thank you for bringing it to us and to those who shared it with you (and us). You are, indeed, a master storyteller.

"My husband and I LOVED Island of Saints and have recommended it to a lot of people. Can't wait for The Heart Mender. Please say there is definitely a movie in the works! Also loved The Traveler's Gift and The Noticer. My husband has also read Return to Sawyerton Springs and loved it. Our daughter loved The Traveler's Gift for kids. Love everything you do!"

"I've recommended Island of Saints to so many, and bought it a few times for a gift. The funniest was giving it to my 83 year old grandmother for her birthday.
When she received it she called my sister, and asked if I had joined a cult because of the book's title. My sister laughed and told her no, so my grandmother began reading it. That night she wasn't able to sleep until she had finished the book. Yes, she read it in one day.
I knew she would love it, and so has everyone I've given or recommended it to. I can't wait to read Heart Mender, especially the where are they at now portion.
Keep writing, you've blessed so many people through your books. I feel so honored that I was able to hear you speak at a conference in California, you are truly an inspiration!"

"I have been a fan since first reading The Traveler's Gift (it continues to be my favorite and the book I give as a gift most often) and believe I have now read everything you've written. I'm an avid reader with an extensive library and you fall into a very small group of "favorite authors". Island of the Saints was a great story and am so glad that so many new readers will have a chance to discover it under it's new title."

"Hi Andy!
I've read everything you've written. LOVED Island of the Saints. So did my step mom and my grandmother. I'm curious, will the heart mender be drastically different or more substantial or...how will compare to Island of the Saints?!?!
God bless!"

I saw you at the Mattress Firm convention in Houston (I was the guy from Mobile and the only Alabama fan when you mentioned football).
You gave us all a copy of the Heart Mender. Really great stuff! Sure enjoyed it.
THANKS,

"I got this book at a Women of Faith conference to read to the family...I picked it up to skim it yesterday and finished it by lunch today. AMAZING story! I can't wait to give this as a gift to anyone who loves history, love, or may need to hear the 'principle'. I didn't think I would like it because of the war aspect, but was I wrong! Thanks for sharing this!!!!! And we enjoyed hearing you at Women of Faith:)"

"hey, i first heard of Andy when i was a sophmore in high school when he came to speak to our students. after that inspirational moment our teacher gave us "The Traveler's Gift" to read for a project. it was awesome. i am now out of high school and used to hate reading. i thought i should start and start by reading all of Andy's books. i have now read "The Noticer, "The Traveler's Gift" (again) and "The Heart Mender". i am on my way to them all. i love these books and the way the stories help my personal life. thanks to Andy"

Thanks Andy."

"Andy, I love all of your books and up until "The Heart Mender", "The Noticer" was my favorite. The Heart Mender touched me in a very personal way. You see, I am (was) just like Helen, full of anger and unforgiveness at someone who hurt me years ago. The principle of forgiveness taught in "The Heart Mender" has made me see my hurt from a different perspective, and by the end of the book, I forgave the person whom I have been harboring hatred for many years. Thank you Andy from the bottom of my heart for the words of wisdom you teach in your books. Forever a true fan!"

"I had the opportunity to hear you speak in Cleveland on the weekend and from your talk I was drawn to your book "The Heart Mender"--once I picked it up I could not put it down. It touched me in a way I needed -- forgiveness is such a powerful principle and once you forgive the world becomes your ocean of beauty and tranquility. I cannot thank you enough for this book and for your incredible presentation on the weekend it was amazing. My heart needed to hear it.. I look forward to reading your other books.. A Fan for LIFE.."

"Andy,
First of all let me tell you a little secret - I am not a reader. The last thing I consider doing with any of my spare time is to sit down with a book. You changed that. I have read all your books. They are all equally good, they stand by themselves. I would have to say the Travelers Gift is my favorite, only because, it captured my heart. If it hadn't I would never have read the rest."

"Dear Mr. Andrews, Recently a friend from church lent me your book "The Heart Mender". Last night I read on page 141 where you have Josef quoting Alexander Tyler. I was so taken by the quote that I jotted down his name so that I could find out more about him. This morning I typed his name in the google search bar on my computer. This is what I found out: No one can trace that quote! It has been attributed to various people over the years, one one them , an Alexander Tytler. Anytime anyone tries to trace it to its source, they can't. It was however, widely attributed to Alexander Tyler in an email that circulated after the Bush/Gore elections. Considering how much research you talked about doing in chapter 1, I'm amazed that you did not do more research on this quote! I had been ready to rush out and find all your other books to read, but now I'm not so sure. Please check your facts!"
