Letter to the Editor

This morning, I am looking at a “letter to the editor” that I cut from our local newspaper.  It’s been professionally framed and I’m deciding where in my office it should hang.  As I sit at my desk, looking for the perfect spot, I am thinking about our upcoming holiday. . .

When I was growing up, the 4th of July wasn’t just an excuse for a long weekend.  Do you remember?  The 4th of July was one of the “big four” holidays and uniquely celebrated.  Thanksgivings held lavish feasts.  Christmas was for hot chocolate and a manger and...

Author Creates International Incident - Begs Forgiveness

First of all, let me begin by stating to those who may be horrified (my wife) and those who might possibly be delighted (my 8 and 10 year old boys) that this is the last blog (I promise) in which I will ever use the word "booger."

Even though I am now a fully functioning adult, in a way, it all happened because I was trying to make the Perkins boy laugh. That's how I see it anyway. At heart, I'm still just a simple smart-aleck trying to be funny for my friends. It's the same thing that used to...

Here's Something You Won't Believe

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to give you some interesting information that you can use in “oil spill conversations” with your friends…

If you have read my latest book The Heart Mender, you know the story is about a forgotten time in American history.  During the first six months of 1942, German submarines (U-boats) were dispatched to American shores to prey upon supply vessels traveling from our ports to...

My Favorite Book?

Hi Everyone!

For those of you who might have wondered, “Where did Andy go?  We haven’t heard from him in a while . . .”, I have been hard at work on my 2011 book.  Whew!  I must admit, it is more than a bit consuming.  Soon, I want to blog on the process.  It will be a great way for me to decompress.  Ha!

Right now, I had to drop everything and tell you (my buddies) what is happening!  I appreciate so much your encouragement and support and wanted YOU to be the first to “understand” the latest development in our lives.  I am very excited about...

Join My Facebook Fan Page

Hi Friends!

Unfortunately, due to Facebook rules and limits, I am being forced to “unfriend,” (THEIR term - not mine) everyone on my Facebook page and create a "Fan Page".

According to their rules, if you want to keep up with me on Facebook, you will need to join my Fan Page. I hate that term, by the way. I wish Facebook would simply call them public pages.

Regardless, when you join my fan page you will continue to receive updates in the same way you are now and you will be able to leave comments. And of course, I am always available at

The Second Half Is About To Begin!

Thank God for the second half!

Have you ever had that thought?  Has your team ever performed below expectations in the first half, only to seem like a different group altogether in the second half?  Well, in a way, they were a different group.  The team that takes the field for the second half is never the same team that played in the first.  Why? Because of halftime . . .

If you’ve never been in a locker...

What Was Your Favorite Christmas?

What was your favorite Christmas?  Perhaps favorite isn’t the best word.
How about . . . memorable?  I have several favorites.  The year I got a raccoon was one of them for several different reasons.  It ranks right up there with all the Christmas days at my grandparent’s house.  Those were the best!  But the most memorable is no contest.  It was the year of the Christmas Eve blizzard!

Your Personal Water Tank

Several years ago, we had almost finished rebuilding our house after the devastation of Hurricane Ivan.  When it came time to choose appliances, I let Polly take the lead.  To me, a dishwasher is a dishwasher.  The only exception was the coffeemaker.  I was like a six year old in Toys-R-Us when I saw the coffee maker of my dreams.  I am a sucker for unusual gadgets and this particular coffee maker was very unusual.

It was a wall-mounted unit that actually allowed one to choose strength and quantity, then at the push of a button, would grind and...

Giving Thanks On Thanksgiving

I have always looked forward to Thanksgiving.  Christmas is still my favorite, but I am fiercely protective of Thanksgiving.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

Personally, I don’t allow myself to look at store displays or listen to radio stations that seem determined to trample Thanksgiving and Halloween in their frantic push to get us to spend our money.  Heck, you know if they could back up, roll over Labor Day, and get a bite of the 4th of July, they’d do that too!
